The last time Todd Burge came to play a Prism Coffeehouse show, he came as the opening act for Mollie O’Brien & Rich Moore, and he won us over with his witty & often off-kilter songs. We are more than happy to have him return, this time to play a solo show.

“Todd belongs in the company of Peter Stampfel, Todd Snider and Paul Thorn with Roger Miller winking from beyond. Look upon his works, ye Mighty, and despair!” – Larry Groce – Host of NPR’s Mountain Stage

“He’s got a great talent as a writer and unique view of the world; he’s invented his own art form. His songs just get better and better.” – Tim O’Brien (Singer-Songwriter, Grammy winner)

“I’m convinced – Ingenious Todd Burge successfully blends more wit and wisdom per song than anyone else I’ve enjoyed in years.” Ron Goad – Vice Pres – Songwriter’s Association of Washington DC

“Like a Randy Newman with a guitar, He’s also been described as a Warren Zevon who can evoke bizarre characters and situations…Burge Live takes the cake” – Amos Perrine- No Depression

“His by-turns smart, serious and funny tunes and his confident stage presence are a master class in the art of the solo singer-songwriter craft.” – Douglas Imbrogno – The Charleston Gazette

Employing wry humor, dexterous guitar (and ukulele) work and drawing on a rich variety of life experiences, Todd Burge has emerged as one of West Virginia’s most prolific singer/songwriters. Burge, has played everything from Alternative Rock (63 Eyes, The Larries) to Contemporary Folk, performing concerts at festivals and in venues as diverse as CBGB’s, The Country Music Hall of Fame, The Kennedy
Center, and of course, literally hundreds of clubs including the obscure, to the world famous Caffe Lena, Club Passim and Music City Roots. He has been a repeat guest on NPR’s Mountain Stage and has been called the “West Virginia’s premier
songwriter”, by its host, Larry Groce. In 2014, Burge wrote 13 songs for a musical adaptation of Love’s Labour’s Lost by William Shakespeare.

Burge, who might be known by many for his method of writing songs from the perspective of odd characters, humans, bugs and animals (listen to Building Characters produced by Don Dixon) released an album of very personal songs in 2015 entitled Imitation Life. The recording was produced by long term collaborator, Tim O’Brien. O’Brien is an inductee of the WV Music Hall of Fame and Grammy winner. The album includes his original song, Change (For Clean Water) which features Kathy Mattea on backing vocals. His most recent album is entitled “Live
in Orlando” (2016) and captures the essence of his live solo performance and, at times hilarious storytelling. Todd Burge resides in Parkersburg WV with his wife Lisa and their children, Will and Sophia.

Firmly planted in Asheville NC’s thriving roots music scene, Tellico is well schooled in bluegrass but with an unbridled organic “Appalachiacana” sound, combining some of the finest voices, songs and instrumental prowess in western North Carolina and beyond. Anya Hinkle and Stig Stiglets’ committed, authentic vocals are alloyed with Aaron Ballance’s flowing and soaring dobro and Jed Willis’ textured and expressive mandolin, rooted in the mountain music they grew up with while pushing tradition into a modern Americana sound aesthetic.

Tellico independently released their debut album Relics and Roses on June 2, 2015. The album features the singing and songwriting of Anya Hinkle (guitar, fiddle) and Stig Stiglets (bass), and showcases Aaron Ballance on dobro and pedal and lap steel and Jed Willis on mandolin and clawhammer banjo. Guitar virtuoso Jon Stickley (Jon Stickley Trio) produced the album and makes a few guest appearances with drums and guitar.

__________
“wonderfully original mountain music”
— Martin Anderson, WNCW 88.7FM

“Tellico picks up where Dehlia Low left off, focusing and refining their sound. Relics and Roses is… step forward in songwriting, with Anya Hinkle and Greg ‘Stig’ Stiglets crafting an acoustic soundscape of Appalachian daydreams that stack up to the works of John Hartford, Emmylou Harris and the Avett Brothers. Songs like ‘I Want To Know’ reach out and grab you immediately – a captivating album.” -Joe Kendrick, Program Director, WNCW

“Asheville, NC has produced some of the most interesting new sounds in the modern bluegrass and old time music scene of late. Something about the community there is drawing creative people, and clumping them together to make string band music that pushes boundaries while holding on to tradition. Tellico is such a group…” – John Lawless, Bluegrass Today

“It’s a mighty impressive band that can take a sound which is literally as old as the hills, and then repurpose it with an approach that’s vital and exciting. Yet, that’s what Tellico has done on their maiden outing, with the result that they’ve suddenly gone from zero to sixty on this initial attempt.” – Lee Zimmerman, Blurt Magazine
