With a smoky and seductive alto, 7-time IBMA Bass Player of the year, is also a renowned band leader. She has an amazing talent for finding great young talent that fits her vision of new directions to take traditional music. For this show at C’ville Coffee she will head up her trio featuring Ben Garnett on guitar, and George Jackson on fiddle. All join Missy with rich and varied vocals. The territory the trio covers is broad and the compass is set by Raines, planted right in the center of the stage, directing with her bass as much as she’s playing it. Her recent album, Royal Traveller (her third album for Compass Records) has garnered both critical and popular acclaim. It reached # 2 on the Contemporary Bluegrass Album Chart. The new project features many Missy originals and a variety of favorites from her huge repertoire.

Missy Raines is a former member of the Grammy-nominated Claire Lynch Band and the acclaimed duo Jim Hurst & Missy Raines. She is on of the most respected and trailblazing figures in bluegrass. Her rich pedigree reaches from legends such as Mac Wiseman, Kenny Baker, Josh Graves, and Eddie & Martha Adcock, to contemporary artists such as Peter Rowan, Laurie Lewis, and Dudley Connell.

“The countless miles Raines has travelled are a gorgeous, weathered patina of her songwriting as well as the careful, arrangements – and rearrangements – of these songs.”
The Bluegrass Situation
“Raines is not only a superb bassist but also an excellent band leader and singer, with a matter-of-fact, low-key delivery that’s sometimes hushed, sometimes seductive, sometimes channeling a simmering unease.”
New York Music Daily

“A seductive amalgam of folk, country, bluegrass, and rock, recalling the earliest platters by Lucinda Williams and Rosanne Cash.”
