The Show!
Michael Clem Trio
Michael Clem, Thomas Gunn & Rusty Speidel have been musical icons for years. The Trio features Clem on guitar, mandola, harp & mouth, and he is sandwiched by two fine fellow Charlottesville VA music chums, Rusty Speidel (of SGGL fame) on guitar & higher vocals, plus Thomas Gunn (of Lost Highway) on upright bass & lonesome-er vocals.
Mike gained fame with Eddie From Ohio who became hugely successful producing nine CDs independently (selling upwards of 150,000 copies to date), touring from Florida to Washington State.
Rusty Speidel of SGG&L Speidel, Goodrich and Goggin (SGG), plays guitar extraordinaire! Formed in Charlottesville, VA in 1983 SGG&L continues to play to sell-out crowds in concert halls like the Barns at Wolf Trap, the Birchmere of D.C., Nashville’s Blue Bird, Atlanta’s Eddie’s Attic, and New York’s Wetlands.
Reared in Europe. Thomas Gunn is a graduate of the internationally renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston, with a degree in film scoring. Gunn’s composition “Mothers in Motels” was nominated for a prestigious Hatch Award in 1994. He he manages to stay busy performing with three bands, teaching music in two private schools, and making homemade stout beer superior even to Guinness.
The Buzzard Hollow Boys
The four members of the Buzzard Hollow Boys met some twenty odd years ago. Featuring Tim “T.A.” Anderson on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Sonny Layne on upright and electric bass, Jeff Saine on pedal steel, lap steel and accordion and Kurt Dressel on electric and acoustic guitar. Located somewhere between the Dust Bowl and the Mississippi Delta and is the happy result of what a couple of decades worth of woodshedding will bring about.
Take Two
In a punning reference to an early Mando Mafia recording, Take Two could easily be viewed as ‘chips off the old block’, part of the next generation of talented old-time string band musicians emerging from Central Virginia, with Ben Perdue (mandolin) and Scott and Ian Friend (mandolin & guitar) being the sons of original Mando Mafia members Kelly Perdue & Rick Friend, and Ryan Grant (upright bass) being the son of bass player & old-time musician extraordinaire Dave Grant. These scions of old-time are joined by accomplished banjo player – and maker – Sam Stallings and up-and-coming young fiddle phenom Colby Pegg- Joplin (both of Staunton-based ‘Lost Indian’) to round out a band that is delighted to be joining in helping launch the Prism’s new iteration, Take Two, as it were.
The Prism Coffeehouse opened in 1966 in its former Rugby Road location. In its 40 year run, the non-profit Prism hosted hundreds of concerts of traditional and acoustic music. Thanks to the generosity and support of our donors and sponsors, the Prism will once again present live folk and acoustic performances in the Charlottesville community.
