From the get go, Mando Mafia broke the rules, literally…who would have thought of an old-time band without a fiddle or banjo? In their first documented appearance in 1989, an early version of the band deliberately broke every rule in the band competition at the Galax Fiddlers Convention and were told not to come back.

That didn’t stop them winning competitions though – they won the non-traditional band competition three times at West Virginia’s Appalachian String Band festival and placed in the top five bands more times than any other band so far in the 40 year history of the festival (- they also won the festival’s competition for best new composition). Despite being a local/non-touring band (day jobs and families took precedence) their music has been heard on NPR and other radio stations nationwide, and their repertoire of interesting and eclectic international tunes (and yes, they never just played old-time music) has been mined by countless mandolinists and other musicians over the years.

The band also played the Prism Coffeehouse, numerous times, over the years. After the passing last year of their founding bassist, Vaughan Mairs, the remaining original members were asked to play for his memorial service, and, recruiting Ryan Marley Grant to play bass, together with Collin Gallahue, who had joined the band after original lead mandolinist Kelly Perdue had himself passed away, they played that memorial and also a benefit for Vaughan’s favorite charity, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. It wasn’t long before folks started suggesting they play the Prism again, so now Mando Mafia once more comes to the Prism stage, in another benefit concert, this time to say thanks to the Prism for all its support over the years.

“Mando Mafia knows how to make listeners an offer they can’t refuse: create a Phil Spectoresque Wall-of-Mandolin that embraces not only the obvious — old-timey string band music from Appalachia, klezmer, bluegrass and polka — but the surprising as well. As in rockabilly, calypso, and reggae — which is why they’ve dubbed it ‘global string band music.'”

“There is so much I like on your CD.”
…Marika Partridge-Producer, NPR’s ‘All Things Considered’“Flatworld has been recorded by quite a few people now and your setting is by far the nicest”
…Andy Cutting, composer
